Oh, what a busy week I have had. All the young scientists in southeastern Alberta were getting ready for the SE Alberta Kiwanis Regional Fair today. I cannot believe all the hard work that went into these projects.

A final one that stood out this week provided me with the inspiration for this week’s article. In case you didn’t make it to the Medicine Hat College to see it, you can try it out right at home.

Let’s gets started!

*Always remember to ask an adult before doing any science experiment.

Materials

  • Smarties® (or other hard shell coated candy)
  • Water
  • Coffee filter
  • Plate
  • Bowl
  • Scissors

It is absolutely amazing the interesting projects this year — these young scientists are really showing me some new material!

I thought this was an interesting experiment… is there really iron in my cereal?

Let’s get started!

*Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials

  • Two different kinds of cereal you would like to investigate the iron content in
  • Zipper sandwich bags
  • Strong magnet

I have been to some pretty amazing Science Fairs this past week. What amazing students we have here in southeastern Alberta!

Many of the projects I have judged have been elementary, so I cannot wait to see what students do for their junior and senior high projects — it would absolutely blow you away how amazing they are!

I do not like to pick favorites, but this was an interesting project this week. Let’s get started!

*Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials

  • Eggs
  • Vinegar
  • Jar (one for each egg that you want to use)
  • Paper towels
  • Table to work on

I am always looking for fun and quick activities to do when I am able to visit all the young scientists in the classroom. They help me show the Scientific Method and how this is applied to the experiments that we are doing.

This activity is particularly interesting as it does not do what many of them hypothesize.

Let’s get started!

*Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials:

  • 2 empty pop cans
  • 24 drinking straws
  • Ruler
  • Table to work at

Procedure:

  1. Using a ruler, lay out all but one of the straws one centimetre apart and parallel to one another.
  2. Place the two…

I have been visiting classrooms the past few months assisting students as they put together their Science Fair projects. The virtual science fair and the in-person SE Alberta Regional Kiwanis Science Fair are fast approaching so there is not a minute to waste!

As a promise to some of my students for working so hard, I will do a fun little science experiment with them testing all the components of the SCIENTIFIC METHOD we learned about. I have had to think long and hard what I am going to do as their projects are absolutely amazing. My work has been cut out for me, and the experiment below is…

We all know what “holiday” is coming up next week — Valentine’s Day of course! I am not about all of the “commercial” things that surround this holiday, but I do like to enjoy a good themed science experiment.

This week, I thought we could do some science all the while creating something to give that special someone in your life. Note: you can get all of the materials at a bulk grocery store here in town quite easily.

Let’s get started!

*Make sure you ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials

  • Citric acid
  • Baking soda
  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Measuring spoons

When I looked at the date, I was so excited that I could share something I did this past week with you. It is a very special day today… it is Nana’s birthday!

I am finding it harder and harder to find the perfect gift for Nana. After wracking my brain, I turned to science (of course). What better way to say “I Love You Nana” than to make something special for her?! I am calling it a sweet treat for a sweet lady. I hope she enjoys it at her birthday party later today…

Let’s get started.

I can hardly believe it’s that time of year – Operation Minerva time! Operation Minerva is a long-standing tradition and one of the first programs to ever be hosted by Praxis. It is a one-day conference for girls in Grade 9 from southeastern Alberta.

We are hoping that by showcasing local women in STEM careers, more of our students will return to the wonderful communities in southeastern Alberta with amazing STEM careers which will allow our communities (especially the rural ones) to continue to thrive!

I know there is not enough room for all of the girls in southeastern Alberta to attend, so I thought I would share one of…
