Often times when I watch the weather on the news, they are throwing out so many weather terms it is sometimes difficult to understand how it is all related to what is going to happen outside that day. One term I hear a great deal about is BAROMETRIC PRESSURE.

The forecaster will say the weather is changing today due to “a rise in barometric pressure.” Just what does this mean though? I think it is time we investigated this further.

Let’s get started!

Please do not hate me, but I have to be honest with all of you, I am quite enjoying the snow we are getting.

Do not misunderstand, I am not fond of the extreme cold, but seeing the snow outside really puts me in a much more festive mood as it makes me think about the approaching Holiday season! Since it has been snowing quite a bit lately, of course, it makes me think… why is snow white? Water is clear, and snow is essentially frozen water, so what is going on here?

Let’s get started!

*Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials

  • Three flashlights
  • Blue, red and green coloured cellophane (you can get this in the…

Oh my, it has been a blast of winter this week! After living in southeastern Alberta for most of my life, you would think I am used to these sudden changes in temperature… no way, it seems like I am shivering all day long.

Of course, this makes me think, how can I stay warm instead of shivering? Is this possible?

Let’s get started!

*Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials

• Hot tap water
• Thermometer
• Freezer
• Aluminium foil
• Two same sized glass jars
• Timer
• Science notebook
• Pen/pencil

Winter is always a difficult season to welcome. Many of us dread the -40℃ weather, the snow and ice this season brings with it. Instead of dreading the cold and icy weather, I thought it might be exciting to learn about ice as the cold weather of winter bears down upon us this week.

I am SO excited. Our 30th annual Family Science Olympics is today!! It has been so long since I have seen so many “scientists” in action face to face.

The Education Students at Medicine Hat College allowed me a sneak peek the other day to see some of the hands-on activities they will be presenting today. I may be a bit biased, but I really do think this will be the BEST Family Science Olympics yet.

I can genuinely say that after having the privilege of organizing this amazing event for so many years. It has also made me a bit nostalgic. I was looking through my files of past activities. I just have to…

Although we officially said farewell to summer as the autumnal equinox ushered in the first day of fall (back in September), it has not really felt like fall is here… Well, I hear that after a week of record-breaking temperatures and summer like days, it is truly going to feel like autumn out there this coming week.

Before autumn misses us completely, I thought we could preserve some of the beautiful leaves out there this year. Let’s get started.

Where the leaves are

dougpete's avatardoug -- off the record

I don’t know about you but I’ve been finding the leaves just amazingly brilliant this summer. I’ve been using the opportunity to take photos of these. My wife’s favourite is on Alma Street in town.

On This Week in Ontario Edublogs, I reflected back to the good ol’ days when we’d shoot to 35mm film and send them to a developer and hope that they were good. They often we returned months after the fact around here.

I found this article interesting and explains a great deal. As simply an observer of things, this years seems different. It seems I was correct and a number of articles are on…
