September has been off to a great start! I am enjoying the craziness surrounding back to school this year. Around the office, I am planning some exciting events that we will be participating in (so keep an eye out for announcements!).

This coming week, we are REALLY excited to be joining Methanex for their Community Days on Wednesday, Sept. 14. We have taken part the last few times it has been out at the plant, and they do an absolutely amazing job showcasing STEM in our community. Of course, Praxis will be there with some hands on activities for participants to take part in as well.

I hate to give away all of my secrets…

Sticky Seed Challenge

All I can say is OH MY! I was walking through the field the other day and when I got home, quite a few “somethings” were poking me in the ankles. I looked down and WOW there were SO many little seeds all through my leggings and socks… They were pretty stuck to me. I challenge you to go for a walk this weekend and try to identify some of these seeds. Hopefully the ones you find will not be all weeds, like mine were.

*Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials
• Pair of shoes
• Old pair of wool socks
• Field or an area to walk around in

Campfire Science

The last weekend before school starts is here… I do not know about you, but I am not allowed to say the “s” word quite yet in my household.
Where did summer go? To be completely honest, this summer is what I needed. I had a wonderful summer; I feel rejuvenated and ready to get back to sharing my love of science and education with pretty much anyone who will listen to me!

All joking aside, it is time to hit the books, and do not forget about Praxis this school year. We have some amazing things we are planning for, so keep reading each and every week so you do not miss out on…

Cool Science

I do not know about you, but I am in desperate need to find some way to cool off on these HOT summer days!
Of course, I turned to science to help me out. This experiment is a great way to cool off for a little bit as the hot summer sun continues its presence in southeastern Alberta. Let’s get started!

Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

• One pair of socks (preferably clean ones!)
• Large plastic tray
• Water
• Sunny day
• Chair
• Stool to put your feet on

Up Close And Personal With Feathers

This week, I thought I would get you outside exploring nature. There is so much to explore in southeastern Alberta if you have the time. Not to mention how very fortunate we were this past week to have beautiful weather to enjoy. Before you know it, the temperatures will begin to get cool, and dare I say it? Snow may arrive…

As I take a walk every day, I see feathers lying on the ground. It seems there are more and more — perhaps they are also enjoying the weather!

Did you know birds are a lot like humans? You have probably noticed you lose strands of hair each and every…

A Bubble Inside Of Another Bubble

With the hot temperatures we are experiencing this week, I am sure many of you are outside taking in some fun summertime activities. One of my absolute favourite activities is making bubbles. We do all kinds of bubbles from small normal bubble blowers to giant bubbles; often making it into a contest to see who can blow the largest. One of the trickiest activities is trying to blow a bubble inside a bubble. If you can master this skill, it is truly amazing.

Let’s get started!

Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials

• Dish soap (I like the blue kind)
• Water
• Clear plastic cup
