Finding Fruit DNA

Praxis is quite excited to be celebrating our 30th annual Operation Minerva Conference on Thursday, March 10!

Each and every year we have such an amazing group of Grade 9 girls from all over southeastern Alberta. I can also proudly say some of the girls that participated in the conference are now our mentors! It is so exciting to see so many STEM professionals return to our wonderful community to work. This year we have to go virtual, but we will be doing an amazing interactive experiment. I thought I would share it here so you can get an idea of what we will be doing.

If you did not receive registration…

Wind Speed

Patty Rooks

I do not know about you, but that wind could go away. It has been exceptionally windy the past few weeks.
There has been damage all over — I’ve even seen a trampoline on someone’s fence. I am going to say that is not where it should be! Well, there really is not anything you can do about the weather, but it has made me think, how can you measure wind speed?

Well, let’s get started!

Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials

  • 5 small paper cups
  • 2 straws
  • Tack
  • Good heavy masking tape
  • Pencil (with a new eraser)
  • Hand held hole punch
  • Permanent marker
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Stopwatch

A Secret Message For Your Valentine

Patty Rooks

Can you believe it is February already? I thought January just started!
I seem to be losing track of time these days… well, there is one holiday I do not want to miss this month – Valentine’s Day!

You do not have to be a romantic in order to enjoy this day with friends and family. I think of it as a day to show those nearest and dearest to us that we care; a little something all of us could use these days. So, in the spirit of the holiday here is a little fun and science too.

Let’s get started!

Culturally Responsive Teaching in Science

techdiva29's avatartechdiva29

I can’t believe I haven’t blogged in over a year! The last year or so has been busy and challenging in many ways. I was busy teaching undergrad and grad courses at two universities, teaching AQ courses, revising the Ontario Science curriculum, writing a research paper on online learning, and just dealing with COVID life in general. But I am back and the goal is to blog every weekend on a variety of topics related to education. However, there will be times where my blog will be about general life topics (e.g., friendship, wellness, etc). I think it’s important that we learn to integrate health and wellness into our daily lives as we are all very busy professionally. For this week’s blog, I want to talk about culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy in science. My background is in science and math and I’d like to get back into sharing my…

Snack Time Science

Patty Rooks

I am going to reveal a secret — but just for the sake of science. My favourite snack is popcorn…
In my opinion there is no such thing as a bad kind of popcorn. I am pretty sure I have tried them all! Seriously speaking though, popcorn is a great snack, but have you ever looked in the bottom of the bowl and wondered why they did not all pop? This makes me wonder is there one particular method that works better than another? We had better investigate further so we do not waste any of those white, fluffy, delicious kernels!

Let’s get started!

Remember to ask an adult before doing…

Saving Snowflakes

Patty Rooks

With all of the melting out there the past few days, I am a bit sad that there may not be any snow left very soon.
Have you ever wondered how can we save these beautiful flakes of snow in order to enjoy them later on in the year? Or perhaps do some experimenting with them later on? Have you ever really examined a snowflake under a magnifying glass or microscope? Did you know that there are no two snowflakes that are the same? Hmm… maybe this could be a great science fair project?
The forecast is calling for some fresh flakes in the next day or two so get saving these…
