Amazing blog posts from this past week:

  • Is there a clear goal, aligned to state standards, for the lesson? Note: It must be clear to all stakeholders what students should know or be able to do as a result of the lesson.

      • Choose: When offering students choices about their learning (for example, two different ways to practice a math skill or three different articles to prepare for a class discussion), give them a bit of time to examine the options and think about which might be a good fit for them.
      • Do: As students are working, support and guide their work. If needed, you might help students refine, change, or reflect on choices they have made.
      • Review: After students finish their work, give them time to reflect on the work they have…

Bee Habitats

I had someone in my household come home recently and say they are going to start beekeeping. Well, I thought this was interesting and commended them on wanting to try something new.
I do not think this is going to be an easy task, and if there is anyone out there willing to lend me some advice, I am willingly going to accept! In the meantime, I have been doing my research and came across an interesting habitat to make for bees. I thought this may be a good idea to start small and perhaps grow our “bee farm” into a larger operation.

Let’s get started!

Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Seed Bombs

As it is getting later in the summer growing season, it is time to do some succession seeding so my yard continues to bloom into the fall and I can keep enjoying the beauty of nature!

I thought this activity may be a fun one to get the whole family involved in. Let’s get started!

Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials

  • Several packages of flower seeds (that are suitable for late season planting — a nice wildflower mix perhaps)
  • Bowl
  • Potting soil/soil mixture
  • Baking tray
  • Several sheets of newspaper
  • Water
  • Field/garden/backyard for planting

Procedure

  1. This experiment takes a bit of preplanning as you need to place the seeds you will be…

A Lesson in Precious Soil

Although we had a bit of rain this summer, it is still extremely dry out there… I am no expert, but I would say we are still experiencing drought like conditions in southeastern Alberta. This is not anything new in Alberta.

In fact, in the 1930s there was a terrible drought in all of Canada. People would look outside and see the soil being carried away by the wind. This was often referred to as a dustbowl. Sometimes this is difficult to see if you live in the city, so I thought we could replicate just how easily the precious soil can leave.

Let’s get started!

A Little Something Delicious

I kind of have soil on my mind this month. Perhaps it is all of the yard work I am doing! This week, I was digging a hole and WOW I could not believe what I saw. There were a number of layers in the soil. Hmmm… why is this? We had better investigate this with a delicious experiment. Let’s get started!

*Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials
• Glass bread pan or any small baking dish will work fine
• Plastic wrap
• Marshmallows
• Graham crackers
• Chocolate ice cream (softened)
• Vanilla ice cream (softened)
