Curveball Science

I have spent a great deal of time lately in the stands at outdoor events. After the past few years, I am completely enjoying getting outside and taking part in various sporting events with friends and family. Most recently, I was at a softball game and we were talking about the “ins and outs” of the game.

Pitching came up; more specifically, what happens when the pitcher throws a curveball? Well, you know me, not knowing enough about this, I had to go home and investigate further!

Let’s get started.

Remember to ask an adult before you do this experiment.

Materials

  • Sheet of paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

Procedure

Sugary Snacks

I have been working with a school on doing a late science fair this year and I was thinking of ideas to share with students. This experiment came to mind — I am sure all of the dentists out there will appreciate it!

Let’s get started!

Remember to ask an adult before you do this experiment.

Materials

  • Eggshell
  • Cola beverage (or any pop of your choice)
  • Clear glass or jar
  • Plastic wrap
  • Tweezers

Procedure

  1. Place the eggshell (without the egg) in the glass.
  2. Cover the eggshell with cola.
  3. Cover the glass with plastic wrap so the pop will not evaporate too quickly.
  4. Every couple of days, take the eggshell out and look at…

Tiny Ecosystems In Your Own Backyard

I have been outside enjoying the warmer spring weather this week. It always amazes me what kinds of little critters emerge early in the spring after their long winter nap.

Can you believe I had a mosquito buzzing around my head last night? I hope any large swarms of these pesky bugs wait a little while longer before emerging! This really got me to thinking though; with our busy lives we miss so much of our surroundings each and every day. There is so much to explore and learn right in front of us. This week, I wanted to show you that even the teeniest of spaces have…

What’s In The Soil?

I do not know about you, but I have been “itching” to get out in the garden and start digging. The weather is just not cooperating… well, if I cannot get outside, I guess I will have to bring some of the outdoors in.

Let’s get started!

Remember to ask an adult before you do this experiment.

Materials

  • Heavy rubber band (one of the really thick ones)
  • Small piece of netting, cloth or flexible screen
  • Small funnel
  • Wide mouth jar or plastic container
  • Soil
  • Lamp
  • Magnifying glass
  • Container for your soil
  • Shovel

Procedure

  1. You need to make a “trap” so you can screen out the dirt from the large organisms…
